What is Horizontal Machining Center (HMC)?
A horizontal Machining Center also known as milling is a machining center that employs a spindle in a horizontal orientation parallel to the ground floor. HMC is designed to provide uninterrupted work production. With the horizontal spindle, the tools stick out from the tool holder side and will cut across the workpiece side, allowing the chips to separately fall out from the table. Horizontal machining centers can reduce part cycle time and facilitate unattended operation by allowing the integration of two-pallet changers.

Unlike the vertical machining center (VMS), Horizontal machining centers (HMC) have the potential on improving cycle times, spindle uptime, and output. Even though HMC has a higher cost than VMC, its higher productivity is noteworthy to all shops. The horizontal machining center can also perform work three times faster than the VMC, allowing production to be more productive and profitable in the long run.
In able to fully meet the benefits of a higher-level horizontal machining center, the other fragment of the process is also required to upraise to a higher level. Here are some of the lists that need to add to investment and must be considered:
- Inspection equipment
- Tool pre-setter
- Tool vending
- Computers
- Fixture
- Coolant
